The Avenues
The Avenues in Salt Lake City
Just northeast of the downtown area of Salt Lake, just east of Capitol is the area known as the Avenues. The neighborhood known as The Avenues is located in the north end of the Salt Lake Valley settled into the shallower slopes of the mountains. The north/south streets that wander up the hillsides are named alphabetically while the east/west avenues which are more level are numbered. The lower hillsides sport the older, more quaint homes, but as you travel up the hills the views become more and more spectacular, and the homes more spacious.
Because of it’s proximity to downtown the old 100 or so year old Victorian homes in the lower Avenues were very popular with the younger crowd who wanted fixer-uppers. Most of them have been upgraded now and the property values have become considerably less affordable than they were in the ‘90’s. During the 1960’s the area was allowed to deteriorate considerably when landlords allowed the properties to become neglected and run-down. With the help of the Greater Avenues Community Council the area has been substantially revitalized and is now considered to be one of Salt Lake’s most sought-after districts.
Recent sales indicate sales ranging from $213,000 for a small, 1,200 sq/ft cottage, to a nearly 6,000 sq/ft on approximately 1.25 acres, for a bit more than $1,110,000, with everything represented in between.
