South Jordan
The City of South Jordan, Utah
The city of South Jordan is located in a portion of the southwestern section of the Salt Lake Valley. Its population was estimated in 2006 to be over 44,000, however the western half of the city has been undeveloped until recently when Kennecott Land, began a master-planned community that could eventually double the population.
Originally a rural farming community South Jordan was settled in 1857 by some of the first Mormons to arrive in the Salt Lake Valley. Those original settlers lived in caves dug out of the bank of the Jordan River with roofs consisting of logs, willows and mud. The city’s elevation ranges from 4,300 feet as it lies near the Jordan River, on up to 5,200 feet as it spreads west to the Bingham open-pit copper mine and the Oquirrh Mountains.
South Jordan, home to multitudes of mature trees, is a mix of many of the older homes built in the area, along with somewhat newer but rural horse properties, to its newest development to the west which includes a man-made lake. Recent sales indicate a range of $130,000 for an approximately 1,600 sq/ft townhouse to a 4,300 sq/ft ranch style home which sold for approximately $560,000.
