The City of Murray

The City of Murray

From east to west across the center of the Salt Lake valley lie the cities of Holladay, Murray and West Jordan.  Although the area eventually known as Murray was agricultural, when a body of ore was found in the Little Cottonwood area in 1870, in addition to the first post office, the first smelter was built in Murray.  Eventually, over the next 30 years, some of the largest smelters in the area were located in Murray.

Over the years the ethnic picture gradually changed as the smelter workers came from all over the world, Japan, Italy, Armenia, Yugoslavia, more that half from Greece alone.  With them came a wide range of religious customs, including the Catholic Church, Lutherans, Baptists, and Methodists creating a bevy of ethnic diversity.

According to the census of the year 2000 there were approximately 34,000 people populating the town of Murray.  The town consists lots of mature trees and streets of quaint little old cottages on up through larger, newer homes on land with a stream running though it. Recent sales indicate a range of a small bungalow selling for $69,000 on up through a large home that sold for over $850,000.
